Dalrymple

|
The Family held a
charter for lands in the fourteenth century.
James Dalrymple, a Lord of Session as Lord
Stair, was created a Baronet in 1664, and later
appointed President of the Court of Session. He
was created Viscount Stair after the revolution
in which King James VII and II was replaced by
Queen Mary and William of Orange. His son was the
notorious Master of Stair, later 1st Earl of
Stair, who issued the letters of 'fire and sword'
which led to the massacre of Mac Ian Mac Donalds
in Glencoe.
The Dalrymples of Newhailes,
Midlothian, descended through Sir Charles
Dalrymple- Fergusson of Kilkerran in Ayrshire,
and Sir David Dalrymple, Lord Hailes. |
