A
truly unique lovely Celtic brooch in sterling silver. A vintage design from the
Art Nouveau period. Believed to have been made in 1910. Original designer
unknown since it was only stamped, sterling. Weight: 4 grams. Size, about 7/8"
or 22.5 mm.

A
seemingly simple design with much
complicated meaning buried within!
The Celts were noted for there use of threes. The center of this piece has a
Triquetra
or Trinity knot entwined in an interlocking with three, there are three
hearts and the central spiral design has three arms.
This central spiral design is referred to as a
triskele,

Triquetra
or
Trinity knot:
The
widely recognized
triquetra or Trinity knot
has been used for the past two centuries as a sign of special things and persons
that are threefold, The
Celts were very familiar with the idea of the trinity, everything came in
threes;
such as Spirit, Mind, Body;
Mother, Father, Child; Power, Intellect, Love; Creator, Destroyer, Sustainer;
Creation, Preservation, Destruction;
Mother, Daughter and Grandmother (Crone) - Past, Present and Future - Self,
brother, and sister, - Man, Woman, God -and
Christianity embraced this knot, famously by Saint Patrick and the shamrock, to
symbolize the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost thus the triquetra appears in many of
the early Christian illuminated manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. |
Triskele:
The
larger central spiral combines the triquetra meaning above into a moving design
called a
triskele.
The triskele Celtic symbol meaning deals with competition and man's progress.
The Greek term triskelion literally means "three-legged," and appropriately,
this sign looks very much like three legs running. The triskele (also referred
to as triskelion, triquetra or fylfot) Celtic symbol meaning holds two major
components of symbolism. The first component: When we observe this symbol, we
are taken with the concept of motion. All three branches (legs, protrusions,
angles) are positioned in such a way so as to make the symbol appear as if it is
in constant forward motion. This is no accident as this feeling of motion in
this symbol represents: action, cycles, progress, revolution, competition, or
moving forward. The second component combines the triquetra meaning as explained
above. |

these two components (motion and triad attributes) lead us to the conclusion

to reach understanding (within the context of one of the many triad dynamics
above listed) |

of these elements are united together within a circle,
the brooch itself, an ancient and universal symbol of unity, wholeness,
infinity, the goddess, and female power. To earth-centered religions throughout
history as well as too many contemporary pagans, it represents the feminine
spirit or force, the cosmos or a spiritualized Mother Earth, and a sacred
space. |
