BALLAUGH CELTIC CROSS

This exquisite solid silver Celtic cross is a miniature reproduction of a freestanding cross on the Isle of Mann  near Ballaugh in the north part of the island.  The Ballaugh Celtic cross is 1 3/8” high by 13/16” wide. It has a polished back, stamped sterling. The front of the cross is antiqued and extremely detailed. There is a hidden loop on the back that accommodates a fairly large chain.

BALLAUGH CELTIC CROSS

There is not a lot of information found on this particular cross.  It is first mentioned in the inventory complied in the archaeological survey of the Isle of Man in 1894 and again in the proceedings of the Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian Society in 1908.
This cross in found on the north of the Isle of Man in the sleepy coastal village of Ballaugh from which it gets its name.  The cross is located in the  graveyard of the church. The village’s name possibly derives from Bal-ny-laghney (Homestead of the Curragh) or Bal-laff (The place of Our Lady). The Ballaugh church was extended and improved in the early and late 1700's and refurbished in the mid to late 1800's.  The church still hold services and has been featured in film productions.
